Adopt-the-Alamatong
July
2005
Do you want to make a difference in your community, and learn about water at the same time?
OR
Are you a Morris Area Girl Scout, looking for Service Hours and/or interested in earning the Adopt-the-Alamatong patch?
If so, the Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (MCMUA) has the project for you!
Portions of the Alamatong are currently over run with invasive or non-native plant species. So what's the big deal, you ask? Invasive plants do not provide a suitable habitat for native animals, and they also don't protect the water the same way native plants do. Wait! Stop! Plants protect the water? Yep, native plants help to filter out excess nutrients from runoff.
What you do to help?
The MCMUA is looking for volunteers and scout troops to adopt a small plot on the wellfield and restore the area, by removing invasive species and planting native species. An
MCMUA staff member will educate teams on invasive species and groundwater. The staff member will then take the teams to their plots and work with them to restore the area. Teams will meet at their plots 3-4 times a year to remove invasives and/or plant native vegetation.
