ParentVegetative Waste Recycling

Prior to the 1980’s most yard waste (grass, leaves and brush) was put out with the family trash and landfilled. However, as many in-state landfills were closed during the 1980’s, because of toxic conditions, and the cost of waste disposal sky rocketed, the benefits of recycling yard waste became apparent. Not only does the use of compost facilities save money, reduce the quantities of materials sent to landfills, but also provides useful materials.

The County of Morris under the auspices of the MCMUA, provides two regional compost facilities for the management of leaves, grass and brush. The facilities are open to contracting municipalities, both in and outside of Morris County, and to landscapers.

Turning waste products into wanted products, from our community for our community.  This is why we keep it clean and high quality.

The leaves are ground and placed into windrows in the fall as they are received.  During the winter and the spring, the windrows are turned frequently by a windrow turning machine to provide oxygen to hasten decomposition.   The leaves quickly turn into a black compost that makes an ideal soil additive.   The compost is sold to residents, landscapers and commercial companies, that mix it with soil to produce top soil.  Residents may also pick up small quantities of compost at the two facilities.

The brush, which includes tree limbs, is double ground in a grinder to produce a fine mulch.  The mulch is sold to residents, landscapers and garden centers for use as ground cover around shrubs, trees, etc.  Residents may also pick up small quantities of mulch at the two facilities.
